Proper Punch/Fist

1. Hold your hand up with fingers together so your hand resembles a blade.
This is the starting point of properly making a fist.

2. The pinky, ring, and middle fingers are tucked into your palm, so that you are unable to see those fingernails.
The tips of these fingers almost touch the top of your palm.
3. The index finger is extended down so that the fingertips rests in the middle of your palm.

4. Fold the thumb to the side so that it rests against the index finger.
Make sure that the thumb is at the comfortable and solid angle and it doesn't' stick out above the knuckles.
The thumb should NOT be stuck under the fingers nor should it be over the end of the hand and sticking up.

Make sure that your wrist is straight, aligned with the forearm, and striking with the first two knuckles. To make a fist, you must squeeze the knuckles together, rather than stretch them apart.
Likewise, you must squeeze the bones within the hand together, so that they reinforce each other and work as a large cumulative mass rather than as a group of individual small bones.

Repeated improperly placed punches can cause misalignment of the many small bones in the wrist, causing swelling and pinching nerves that run through the wrist to the hand.
